1. Remote start not working — general troubleshooting
This is the most common category. Before diving into specific faults, work through this baseline checklist, then use the flash code (if any) to narrow it down.
First-response checklist (covers most "won't remote start" calls)
When a customer reports the vehicle won't remote start, confirm these basics first — they resolve a large share of calls:
- Fuel level must be above a quarter tank.
- All doors and windows closed.
- Factory keys far enough from the vehicle (a key too close can block remote start).
- Drive the vehicle for a couple of minutes to reset the remote-start attempt counter (the system allows a limited number of remote-start attempts before it requires the vehicle to be driven / the factory key shown).
- Push-to-start button must be seated in the ignition (for push-to-start vehicles, the button has to be in place for remote start to function).
Diagnosing by flash code (critical first step)
If the vehicle attempts to start but fails, the parking lights flash an error code. Have the customer:
- Stand next to the vehicle and attempt the remote start.
- Watch the parking lights / dashboard hazards and count the number of flashes.
- That flash count is an error code — look it up in the Flash Code Reference (end of this document) to identify the specific fault.
This is the single most useful diagnostic step for remote-start failures.
Common specific faults in this category
Works inside the car (key held to push-button) but not remotely / key in box not recognized. The system isn't reading the key stored in the key box. Have the customer verify the key emulator is properly seated and making contact in the box (see the Emulator / Key Box section). A nine-flash code typically points here — the stored key isn't being detected.
Key reads nine flashes / "memory loss." Reinsert the key in the box correctly — arrow on the key pointing toward the IR tip, chip properly oriented. Improper key orientation causes the system not to detect it. Reinserting correctly resolves it.
Cold-morning no-start with no flashing lights at all. No flash code plus cold weather points toward battery voltage (see Battery / Voltage). The system won't attempt remote start if voltage is too low. Have the vehicle battery checked/replaced.
EIS board / solder-point concerns. For vehicles requiring the EIS (Electronic Ignition Switch) soldering modification: whether soldering is needed depends on the vehicle — get the full VIN to confirm. If a customer reports a lifted trace or damaged solder dot on the EIS board, have them send a photo of the EIS board and solder points plus name/phone for engineering review.
Wrong part for the vehicle (e.g. 907G vs 907). Some no-start issues are simply the wrong unit for the model year. Confirm the part number matches the vehicle (this is a frequent cause on newer Sprinters — see Harness / Connector Fitment). Resolution is exchange/return for the correct unit.
Compatibility limits. Some older vehicles (e.g. 2015 Volvo XC60 with the older radio) are not supported — no technical fix; the unit must be returned as incompatible.
When to escalate
If the flash-code lookup and checklist don't resolve it, collect:
- Full VIN
- Photos of the EIS board / ignition switch modification and the key
- A short video demonstrating the failure and the flash pattern
Then route to engineering for review. For hardware faults, the unit can be sent in for repair (≈1-day turnaround with overnight freight; an RMA number is required before shipping).
2. Settings & configuration
Many "not working right" calls are actually configuration issues, not faults — the hardware is fine but a setting needs changing. These are high-value because they're quick fixes once you know where to look. Most settings live in the secret/hidden menu accessed through the vehicle's instrument cluster (or the drone app for some options).
Valet mode is on (very common — four flashes)
Symptom: Vehicle won't remote start; parking lights flash four times; or remote start seems disabled. Cause: Valet mode is enabled — this deliberately disables remote start. Fix: Turn valet mode off. Two ways:
- Via instrument cluster menu: access the cluster menu using the steering- wheel controls and change the remote-start setting from off to on / turn off the valet box.
- Via drone app: open the app, turn off valet mode in settings, and save. Then start the vehicle manually once to reset.
Four flashes = valet mode is the standard mapping — check this first on any four-flash call.
Heated/cooled seats or HVAC not activating on remote start
Symptom: Vehicle remote starts but heated seats, cooled seats, rear defrost, or climate don't come on. Fix: The seat/climate must be set to auto mode with a target temperature before shutdown — the system restores the last set climate state on remote start. Have the customer set the heated seat and HVAC to auto at the desired temperature, then shut down normally. On the next remote start it should restore. If it still doesn't, the remote-starter climate settings may need configuring — verify in the cluster menu.
Accessing the settings / programming menu — two methods by product
How settings are changed depends on the product:
- Passenger cars (instrument-cluster menu): most Mercedes passenger-car SmartKey Starters use the instrument-cluster menu, navigated with the steering-wheel buttons (volume/scroll + hang-up/mute). To reach the advanced/hidden menu, from the main menu hold the hang-up (or mute) button ~7-8 seconds — RPM, flash behavior, IGN debounce, and other advanced options live here.
- Sprinter (turn-signal stalk): the SKSNG906/906RV/907 use the turn-signal stalk, not a cluster menu — see the full step-by-step in the Sprinter-specific section below.
If a customer asks "how do I change my run time / turn off the light flash / etc," first determine the product: Sprinter → stalk method; passenger car → cluster menu. Common adjustments (RPM, flash behavior, debounce) are in the advanced menu.
Disabling the parking-light flash on start
Symptom: Customer finds the parking-light flashing on remote start undesirable, or reports periodic marker-light blinking. Fix: In the secret menu (e.g. SKS-NG-205D4), turn off the light-flash option on the first page to disable the parking-light flash. Running lights remain on. Note: some blinking is a factory program behavior and is also toggled in the cluster settings menu (see owner's manual).
High idle won't engage / stuck in high idle
Symptom: Van starts but stays in high idle and can't be shifted to drive; or high idle won't activate at all. Fix: High idle requires the purple/white wire grounded AND the parking brake engaged. The installer can either ground the purple wire permanently or put it on a switch. Once grounded with the parking brake on, the unit goes to a preset RPM, adjustable via the stock up/down function. If the customer wants high idle and has the standard kit, upgrading to the high-idle kit is an option (send modules back for replacement).
Drone app not reporting temperature / config issues
Symptom: Temperature not showing in the drone app, or settings not taking. Fix: Log out and back into the app, or unplug/replug the drone module. For persistent issues, a CM module can be connected to verify temperature is reported. Configure options via the app: select the vehicle → configure → save.
Idle/behavior tuning (advanced)
For intermittent shutdown or debounce-type issues, the IGN debounce setting in the hidden menu can be turned up incrementally until resolved. This is an advanced adjustment — provide the video guide for accessing it.
3. Battery & voltage issues
Low battery voltage is a frequent root cause of remote-start failure — the system won't (or can't) start the vehicle when voltage is too low, and low voltage also disrupts the CAN communication the unit depends on. Note: many calls tagged "battery" are actually key-not-detected (nine flashes) issues that present similarly — see the distinction below.
Low voltage preventing remote start
Symptom: Intermittent no-start, especially after the vehicle sits, or in cold weather; sometimes no flash code at all. Cause: Battery voltage dropped too low; the vehicle shuts down the CAN network to protect the battery, and the remote starter can't communicate. Fix:
- Let the vehicle sit overnight to recharge, then retry; if it fails again, the battery likely needs testing/replacement (recommend a battery draw test).
- On vehicles with a house-battery/BMS setup (RVs, vans): set the battery management system's state-of-charge threshold higher so it starts the vehicle before deep discharge. The SmartKey Starter can be wired to the BMS to keep batteries above ~10%.
"No key detected" / nine flashes (often mistaken for battery)
Symptom: Lights click as if starting, then "no key detected"; nine flashes; works with key inside the car but not remotely. Cause: The key stored in the box isn't being read — usually a key sync/emulator/seating issue, NOT battery. Nine flashes = key not detected. Fix: Re-sync the key:
- Remove the key from the box, put a battery back in it, start the car with that key inside, let it run.
- Put the key back in the box and re-sync.
- Verify the battery emulator is positioned correctly (toward the front of the key; may need slight rotation) and that the keybox bracket is holding down the unlock button.
- If it persists, replace the key's battery, check emulator solder points, or swap keys to isolate a bad key.
Hybrid / 48-volt vehicle incompatibility
Symptom: Remote starter not working on newer GLE / 48-volt mild-hybrid Mercedes. Cause: The 48-volt hybrid battery system may not be supported. Fix: Confirm whether the vehicle has a 48-volt system before assuming a fault. Some are not yet supported (engineering may be working on coding solutions — timeline can be months). Send the VIN to [email protected] to verify compatibility.
Reduced key-fob range after install
Symptom: Factory key fob range drops sharply; OBD Bluetooth reader can't communicate. Fix: Replace the battery in the factory key fob first. If range is still poor, consider rerouting the antenna higher into the dashboard. Bypassing the SmartKey Starter module with a jumper plug isolates whether the module is involved.
4. Module & harness faults
When basics and configuration are ruled out, the issue may be a genuine module, EIS, or harness fault. The core diagnostic technique here is bypass jumpers — they remove the Mid City modules from the equation to isolate whether the fault is ours or the vehicle's.
Bypass-jumper isolation (the key diagnostic)
Use this to determine if the fault is the module or elsewhere:
- Unplug the Mid City modules from the vehicle harness.
- Plug the bypass jumpers in their place.
- Test. If the problem disappears with jumpers in, the module is implicated. If it persists, the issue is in the harness/vehicle — check connections and wires, and remove the harness if needed.
Nine flashes then immediate shutdown
Symptom: SmartKey Starter starts then shuts off immediately with nine flashes; or nine flashes and won't start. Diagnosis: Nine flashes = key-in-box not recognized. Verify the key is seated properly on its coil in the box, no wires loose/disconnected. Reseat the EIS and try remote starting with the key inside the car. If it only works with the key inside, the key↔module connection or a faulty key is the cause.
Checking the EIS module
Technique: Remove the push button from the ignition, insert the key to position 1, and observe the module LEDs. A single yellow-light flash indicates an EIS issue. Check the EIS for loose connections or incorrect modification. For diagnosis, send a photo of the wiring (with wire gauge if known) to Mid City Engineering.
Push-to-start vs. key-start EIS modification
Important distinction — get the VIN to determine which:
- Push-to-start vehicles: solder one pin and wire to the EIS board.
- Key-start vehicles: require nine solder points, and the module itself is different from the push-to-start module. Using the wrong module/modification for the vehicle type causes faults.
Hood-switch code
Symptom: Module throws a hood switch code; remote start won't complete. Fix: Verify the hood pin switch / that the hood is registering as closed. If the hood-switch code persists after checking, and bypass testing points to the module, replace the SmartKey Starter module.
Suspected module hardware failure
If the PCM module flashes orange/red, or you suspect daughter-board damage: these are hardware faults. Replace the main module, or send it in for repair (RMA required). Confirm the correct part number for the vehicle first — installing the wrong module (e.g. wrong pin count) is a common cause.
5. Harness & connector fitment
Fitment problems are largely installation-time issues — the connector physically won't mate. These have a high resolution rate because the fixes are concrete and mechanical. The recurring theme: guide tabs and shrouds on the plugs.
Plug won't fit the EIS module (guide-tab misalignment)
Symptom: The blue/purple/green/magenta T-Harness plug won't seat into the EIS module; guide tabs are misaligned. Fix (two options):
- Swap the shrouds: slide the shroud off both the factory connector and the EIS-side connector and swap them, so the plug mates correctly.
- Cut the guide tab: trim the little guide tab on each side of the plug (purple/magenta/green depending on the harness) so it aligns and seats.
Both are standard, approved fixes — the tabs are the common blocker across the blue, purple, magenta, and green plugs.
The green-light connector-identification procedure
Many fitment/wiring calls resolve with this core procedure for finding the correct CAN connection:
- Install the T-harness and module behind the ignition first, then add the CAN wires one at a time.
- Unplug the factory CAN connectors (brown / brown-red wires) one by one until the yellow light shuts off — that identifies the correct connector.
- Plug that connector into the purple connector on the module (the remote- start side).
- With the key in position 1 and the correct plug connected, the module should flash green (not yellow).
- Keep the ignition on for at least 30 seconds before shutting off to maintain key-code synchronization.
Green light in position 1 = correct connection made.
Keyless-go wiring (blue/blue-white and brown/brown-red)
For keyless-go functionality: connect the blue/blue-white factory wires and the brown/brown-red keyless-go wires. Disconnect factory plugs in the CAN distribution block one at a time until the yellow light stops blinking, then route that factory plug to the keyless-go harness. Test communication between the keyless-go module and door handles during remote start.
Gauges disappear when keyless-go wires connected
Symptom: Instrument gauges vanish when keyless-go wires are connected (e.g. 2018 GLC-43). Fix: This indicates a wrong CAN connection — recheck which block the keyless-go wires are tied into (correct block has blue/blue-white and green plugs, often under the passenger footwell). Wrong harness for the vehicle (e.g. needing the 222D4 for S-class) can also cause this — verify the harness matches the model.
Cruise control unavailable after high-idle/remote-start install
Symptom: "Active distance assist currently unavailable" / cruise control not working after installing the high-idle remote-start kit. Fix: This is a known interaction. Verify jumper connections and CAN wiring are correct per the procedure above; a system reset may be needed. (If it persists after correct wiring, escalate — see flash-code reference and engineering.)
6. Keyless-go / lock-unlock issues
Keyless-go problems affect proximity lock/unlock and are tightly connected to the key-in-box system — many present as nine flashes (key not recognized). The keyless-go connection is what lets the system lock/unlock and control the push-to-start while remote started.
Nine flashes / key not recognized (most common here)
Symptom: Push-to-start key flashes nine times; remote start intermittent; works with key inside but not remotely. Fix (the standard re-sync procedure):
- Remove the key from the key box and put a battery back in it.
- Make sure it's the only key present in the vehicle.
- Use it to lock/unlock the doors and start from the push-to-start button.
- Once it's working, reinsert the key into the key box.
- Check the bracket over the unlock button — if it's sticking out slightly, remove/adjust it so the key makes full contact.
Constant locking/unlocking during remote start
Symptom: Side door (Sprinter) or doors continuously lock/unlock during remote start, making a repeated clicking sound. Fix: Indicates a keyless-go wiring/CAN issue. Verify the keyless-go connection — test which plug retains radio function while push-to-start doesn't, power-cycle the module, and check the purple wire for voltage during normal vs. remote start.
Proximity unlock not working
Symptom: Proximity unlock feature not working (e.g. SKS-NG-907 on a 2024 Sprinter). Fix: This is a proximity-programming issue — often requires tech follow-up for proximity programming. Verify the keyless-go module placement (right front footwell for many kits) and connection first.
Keyless-go connection procedure & wiring
Key facts for keyless-go install:
- Keyless-go does not require deep-pinning of CAN wires; the special tool is only for push-start installs.
- Connect by soldering the smart-key module's brown and brown-red wires to the factory harness (tape off the factory wires), or via the provided harness.
- Wiring reference: brown → green LED, brown-red → yellow LED. If wrong, the LEDs won't behave correctly.
- Some newer EIS part numbers require a different resistor to increase voltage — if the EIS was replaced, check this.
Gauges / erratic behavior when keyless-go connected
Symptom: Push-to-start becomes inoperable, 12V battery error on cluster, or erratic behavior when the keyless-go module is connected. Fix: Wrong keyless-go connection. Unplug and re-identify the correct plug by process of elimination, reconnect correctly, and verify the key in the box is properly seated. If unresolved, the EIS or ECM may need reprogramming — bring the vehicle back to the installer.
7. Programming, pairing & the green light
This covers getting the module to communicate (green light), pairing remotes, and setting runtime. The green light in ignition position 1 = good connection is the anchor indicator throughout.
No green light on the module
Symptom: Can't get a green light when connecting the module to the harness; CAN loop stays orange. Fix:
- Connect the module to the driver's side harness and check if the green LED flashes; if nothing, try the passenger side harness.
- Unplug the PCM module, check for loose wires or bent pins on the harness to the passenger-side module, reseat, and retest.
- Confirm the key position in the box is forward enough that the little bar passes the set of teeth.
- Remember the connector-ID procedure (Section 5): unplug CAN connectors until the yellow light goes out, plug into the module's purple connector, look for green in position 1.
Pairing CompuStar / RF remotes (the five-cycle procedure)
Symptom: Remotes won't program; no horn honk / parking-light flash when attempting to pair. Fix (standard RF pairing):
- Connect the antenna adapter into the black port on the module.
- Cycle the ignition on/off five times (use the turn knob if push-to-start — pull the button out and turn the key). Do it quickly, ensuring all warning lights flash each cycle.
- Watch for the horn honk / hazard flash confirming pairing mode.
- Press the button on the antenna, then press lock on all remotes.
- Do the cycling with the door closed and faster if it's not entering pairing mode — timing matters.
- Do NOT use AM remotes — they interfere with FM programming.
Setting runtime (15 minutes)
Fix: Hold the mute button on the steering wheel until the menu appears, use the left turn signal to navigate, and tap the mute button toward you to set runtime to 15 minutes.
Five flashes = needs to see the factory key
Symptom: Remote start fails with five flashes, or works once then fails the second time in a day. Cause: The system needs to regenerate key codes from the factory key. There's a limited number of remote starts before it must see the factory key. Fix: Start the vehicle manually with the key and let it run 30-60 seconds to generate new key codes, then retry remote start. Ensure the valet switch's dot side is pushed in to allow remote starts.
Module version / box mismatch
Note: some units shipped with V3 modules in V4 boxes or mislabeled stickers. If programming behaves impossibly, verify the module version matches — a mismatched/mis-stickered unit may need replacement (RMA).
8. Drone / app connectivity
The drone is the telematics module enabling app control (remote start, lock, GPS). Note: a large share of "app not working" calls are actually valet mode or a key-code issue, not the drone itself — check those first.
App not connecting / no commands working
Diagnostic order:
- Check valet mode first (very common cause): turn the ignition on, tap the brake 10 times quickly (after pressing push-to-start twice without foot on brake) — or turn valet off in the drone app and save. This resolves a large fraction of "app not working" calls.
- Power-cycle the drone: unplug the data cable from the drone for ~10 seconds and replug. Healthy re-init blinks red, then green slowly, then orange slowly. A firmware update may be needed (also fixes a wrong-email-on-account issue).
- Verify the serial in the app matches the unit.
- If LTE flashes but GPS lights are off / no commands for an extended period, the module may need a reset + firmware update, or an RMA.
Five flashes via the app
Symptom: App remote start gives five flashes. Fix: Same as programming Section 7 — the system needs the factory key. Start manually with the key, run 30+ seconds, retry.
Drone reactivation / account
If the drone was previously deactivated (subscription lapsed or >60 days unregistered), it needs reactivation — have the installer reconnect the drone to the module and call in to reactivate. The drone from an original order can be reused on a new vehicle's kit (it's a separate telematics module). CompuStar subscription is ~$6/month per car.
Drone vs. remote-start exclusivity (some vehicles)
On some vehicles (e.g. Volvo XC40), you can use either the drone or the RF remote, not both. Recommend the drone for range/convenience (~1,200 ft).
9. Key takeover & vehicle shutdown
Key takeover is how the driver takes over a remote-started vehicle to drive it. A huge share of "it shuts off when I get in" calls are simply key takeover being done wrong — it's usually not a fault. Six flashes is the signature code here.
The correct key-takeover procedure (the #1 fix in this category)
Symptom: Vehicle shuts off when the driver gets in / presses the brake after remote start; won't let them shift into gear. Cause: Improper key takeover. After remote start, the vehicle is in a protected network state and must be formally "taken over." Fix — the standard procedure:
- Get in with the key on you (in pocket).
- Press and HOLD the brake AND the push-to-start button simultaneously.
- Hold for at least half a second to a second — a quick tap won't register.
- The engine will shut down and immediately restart — this is normal. Now you can shift and drive.
Critical point: pressing the brake alone (without the button) will shut the vehicle down — that's the most common mistake. It must be brake + button together, held.
Six flashes on key takeover / remote start
Symptom: Cranks once then shuts down; six parking-light flashes; especially when touching the brake during takeover. Cause: Six flashes typically corresponds to the brake being seen / an incomplete takeover, or a keyless-go connection issue. Fix: Perform the takeover correctly (above). If it persists, check the jumper harness connection between the brown and red wires — a bad keyless-go connection makes takeover fail; the vehicle should shut down and restart cleanly once keyless-go is right. If keyless-go is suspect, have the installer redo that connection.
Battery involvement in takeover failure
If takeover fails intermittently and the battery is 4-5+ years old, low voltage during takeover can prevent the shift. Mercedes recommends replacing the vehicle battery every 4-5 years — check/replace it. Low voltage causes "no shift" after takeover.
HUD / other CAN devices interfering
Symptom: Heads-up display stops working after remote start, or restart/ shutdown loops. Fix: Having both the HUD and an Escort Max (or other device) running through CAN can cause conflicts. Try letting it run 10-15 minutes before shutting down, and check for CAN contention between accessories.
10. Module & component locations by vehicle (installer reference)
This section is the AUTHORITATIVE, per-vehicle reference for EIS/EZS location, PCM location, and the exact connector color, type, and pin count. Because the same product uses different connectors on different vehicles, always look up the specific vehicle here rather than relying on a product-level generalization. Terminology:
- EIS = Electronic Ignition Switch (behind the key cylinder on most vehicles).
- EZS = ignition-switch module that is a separate module, not at the push-to-start button (newer vehicles).
- On vehicles with a separate EZS, remote-start install also requires a T-harness at the PCM module (see the PCM table).

On vehicles with a separate EZS (§10b) and on the W907 Sprinter, remote start also requires a T-harness at the PCM. Standard connection: unlatch and unplug the black 32-pin OEM plug from the PCM, connect it to the black mating plug on the T-harness, then plug and latch the T-harness's 32-pin black connector into the PCM. The PCM-side T-harness has a breakaway connector so it can be routed through the dash. 10e. Keyless-Go (KG) connection locations by vehicle (authoritative)
The KG connection re-routes the OEM Keyless-Go module's CAN pair (twisted brown & brown/red) through the module's 2-pin white "KG" port so door-handle lock/unlock and key-present work during remote start. Required only on push-to-start (Keyless-Go) vehicles. Made either at a CAN distribution block (finder test) or directly at the KG module (de-pin).
Shared KG finder-test procedure (applies to all distribution-block rows below unless noted): connect the KG harness to the module's "KG" port, remove the push-to-start button, key to ACC (first click) → yellow LED flashes (red too). SKSNG213: press the PTS button once instead of using a key. SKSNG205D4 blue/blue-white test: key inserted but NOT turned. Unplug block connectors one at a time (allow ~10 sec); the KG plug is the one whose removal makes ONLY the yellow LED stop flashing while the red LED stays on. If ALL LEDs go out, that's not it — reconnect and continue. Two-candidate vehicles (W205/X205 2015-19, W222 2014-17): the correct plug (a) disables push-to-start when removed AND (b) leaves the radio working when starting with the key. SKSNG164 instead: test lock/unlock from the OEM fob with each candidate removed. Connect: V1/adapter harness (legacy) → de-pin OEM brown & brown/red into the adapter (SKSNG205D4: brown/red→pos 1, brown→pos 2), plug the empty OEM plug back into the block; V2 coupler harness (current) → plug the located OEM connector straight in (brown→ brown, brown/red→brown/red). Verify: key to ACC → green LED flashes; then manual-start 30 sec, shut down, remote start, confirm door-handle lock/unlock. Other component locations (from support calls)
- Key box: under the dash near the back of the ignition cylinder. If a customer can't find it, it was often removed during service (may be bagged). For signal, it can be moved toward the vehicle center or zip-tied to the starter module.
- EIS fuse: check the passenger footwell if the module isn't powering.
The CAN-wire identification test (applies at any location)
To find the correct CAN connection on any vehicle: put it in accessory (position 1), unplug the brown/brown-red wires one at a time until the yellow light shuts off, route that connector to the harness/purple connector, confirm a flashing green light. See §12.
11. Emulator & key box faults
The key box holds a sacrificed factory key with a battery emulator in place of the key's battery. This is the heart of how the system starts the car, and nine flashes (key not detected) is overwhelmingly the code here. Most issues are contact/seating problems.
Nine flashes — key not detected (the dominant issue)
Symptom: Nine parking-light flashes; vehicle won't remote start; often "works fine, then stops seeing the key," or fails if the box is moved slightly. Cause: The system isn't reading the key in the box — a contact/seating problem with the emulator or key. Fix — work through these in order:
- Check the U-shaped bracket in the key box is holding down the unlock button when the box is closed. The box must be snug over the button, fully depressing it. This is the single most common fix. (If there's no bracket, one may need to be installed.)
- Check the key's prongs are making contact with the battery emulator. Reposition/adjust the emulator (toward the front of the key; slight rotation) for good contact.
- Test for power to the key: have someone hold the unlock button inside the vehicle while sending a remote start from outside — if the LED on the key doesn't light, check the emulator's connection with a multimeter for proper voltage. Verify the red wire → positive PCB terminal, black wire → negative.
- "Wake up" a stalled key: remove it from the box, put it in the ignition, run the car a couple minutes, then reinsert into the box.
- If solder points on the key box are damaged (a microchip solder lifting is a known failure), resolder or send the unit in.
Key box unplugged / connection
Sometimes simply unplugging the key box and replugging it resolves it. If the box was removed during service, it needs to be located/reconnected.
Signal strength (intermittent, moves when box shifts)
Symptom: Works until the box is moved, then stops seeing the key. Fix: Signal/contact is marginal — move the key box toward the center of the vehicle or zip-tie it to the starter module for a stronger, stable signal.
When to send in for modification
For EIS/key-box modification (sacrificing a key, soldering the ignition node): the customer sends the EIS, key box, and one vehicle key to Mid City Engineering. Typical turnaround is same day if delivered on time; there's a ~$100 modification charge plus shipping. Include the invoice (inside or marked on the package). The main unit is kept by the customer. Push-to-start needs the extra key + ignition-switch soldering; key-start needs the nine solder points (see Section 4).
12. CAN / power harness wiring
This covers the core wiring connections — the CAN (control) wires and power/ ignition. Getting these right is what produces the green light; getting them wrong produces the persistent yellow light and no-communication faults. The identification procedure below is the master technique referenced throughout this document.
The master CAN-wire identification procedure
This is the single most important wiring procedure — most "yellow light won't go green" and no-communication calls resolve with it:
- Install the T-harness and module behind the ignition first.
- Locate the brown and brown-red (twisted pair) CAN wires — these are the keyless-go / CAN control wires.
- Unplug the factory CAN connectors one at a time until the yellow light shuts off — that identifies the correct connector.
- Plug that factory connector into the purple connector on the module (the remote-start side).
- Add the remaining CAN wires one at a time, testing as you go.
- With the key in position 1 (accessory) and the correct plug connected, the module flashes green instead of yellow. Green = correct connection.
- Keep the ignition on at least 30 seconds before shutting off to preserve key-code synchronization.
Wire-to-LED reference: brown → green LED, brown-red → yellow LED.
Power & ignition connections
- The install needs constant power, ground, and ignition in addition to the CAN connection.
- Confirm voltage on the ignition wires and constant-power wire if the module isn't waking up.
- For the siren: the brown wire is the positive siren output. The factory horn may not work when the ignition is off, so the external siren connection matters for alarm alerting.
Blue / blue-white factory wires
For keyless-go and cluster functionality, the blue and blue-white factory wires connect (often with a blue connector) to the driver's-side under-dash junction block. A missing blue/blue-white connection is a common cause of "no flashing light on key insert" (see the confirmed fix in the general section: connecting these to the junction block restored expected behavior).
Persistent yellow light (won't go green)
Symptom: Correct-seeming CAN wire plugged in but the yellow light keeps flashing and never turns green. Fix: Wrong connector or a wiring fault. Re-run the identification procedure above — the correct wire makes all lights shut off momentarily, then gives a flashing green in position 1. Check both sets of brown/brown-red wires. If no combination produces green, check for bent pins in the connectors and verify the harness is the correct one for the vehicle.

Keyless-Go connection procedure (shared, authoritative): remove the PTS button, key to position 1 (ACC) — yellow + red LEDs flash. Unplug CAN-block connectors one at a time and watch the yellow LED; the plug that makes it stop flashing (may take up to 20 sec) is the one. Of those, find the plug that still lets you lock/unlock with the OEM fob — leave that one disconnected from the block and connect it to the provided KG harness (match brown→brown, brown/red→brown/red). Correct connection = green LED flashes with the key in position 1. Test: with the vehicle remote-started, lock/unlock from the door handle (key on you) must work.
KG harness versions (V1 vs V2): the black end of the KG harness tells you which procedure applies. V1 = a 2-pin black plug with a 2-pin female adapter on the end → you must de-pin the OEM wires and re-pin them into the adapter. V2 = a 2-pin male plug with a coupler → no re-pinning; once you've found the correct block plug, just plug it into the KG harness. Check which version you have before starting the KG connection.
Compustar RF remote pairing (shared, authoritative): cycle the key off→ ignition 5×; parking lights flash 1× after the 5th cycle. Then press the antenna button (if it has one) and press LOCK on each remote — lights flash as each pairs, and 2× when exiting programming. AM remotes are not supported (they interfere with FM).
Key takeover (shared, authoritative): remote start, then press the push-to- start button 1× (no brake) OR insert the key and turn to the 2nd position (IGN) — parking lights flash 3× and you can shift into gear. Do not turn the key past the 2nd position (turning to crank during takeover breaks HVAC until the ignition is cycled). Leave running ≥30 seconds after takeover (see the 30-second rule) or you'll get error code 5.
Key-box install (SKSNG166D4 and other key-box / push-to-start platforms, authoritative): an extra key is required. Remove the metal key blade; remove the battery cover (press the tab inside the key); remove the battery; insert the battery emulator with the arrow facing the key tip, positive side angled down/in first (on 213/167 the emulator is inserted from inside the key box with the text "BACK OF KEY" facing the side of the key with no buttons), and push it fully into the battery slot. Insert the key into the key box buttons-down on the foam (213/167: buttons facing out), lid on, secure with the 4 provided screws (#1 Phillips). Plug the key box's 2-pin white plug into the KEY port on the module. Key positioning is strict — too far forward or not far enough forward in the bracket = a key error (9/11 flashes). The key box must be fully closed and dark: if any light gets into the box, remote start will not work. On key-start (D4T) platforms an RJ cable connects the EIS to the key box — make sure it's secure.
U-bracket over the unlock button — product-specific:
- SKSNG167 (and 166D4 family): USE the U-shaped bracket — slide it into the slots on the side of the key so it holds the unlock button down.
- SKSNG213: DO NOT use the bracket to hold the unlock button down.
This is a real difference between the two dual-module products — using the bracket on a 213 (or omitting it on a 167) causes key-detection faults.
EIS jumper modification (key-box / push-to-start platforms, authoritative): the EIS must be removed from the dash. Inside the key box is a small bag with a pin, thin wire, and a cap. Remove the EIS board from its case; insert the pin and solder it to pin 8; attach the wire to the pin and solder the wire to the solder point next to the white optical sensor; verify with a continuity test. Read the full EIS-modification instructions and watch the demo video before attempting — board-level soldering is required, and the wrong soldering equipment can damage the EIS. A bad or missing EIS mod is a root cause behind stubborn 9/11-flash faults. The EIS can be sent to Mid City Engineering for modification (312-421-1114 / [email protected]) if the installer isn't equipped for board-level soldering — a good option to offer.
G-Wagon key-box interference (D4T): on some G-Wagons the EIS has a metal ring that interferes with the key box once the EIS is remounted in the dash. The tell: the vehicle remote starts with the EIS out, but fails once the EIS is mounted. Apply the G-Wagon ring fix (per the manual).
SKSXC — SmartKey Starter for Volvo (distinct product)
The SKSXC is architecturally different from the Mercedes SmartKey Starter line. It connects to the Volvo telematics module in the passenger-side kick via a simple 4-wire connection — no EIS T-harness, no EIS modification, no key box. It's the simplest install in the line.
Compatibility: XC40 2018-21, XC60 2017-21, S60 2021, V60 2021, S90 2017-21, V90 2017-21, XC90 2015-22. (Any current-body Volvo with OEM telematics + remote start should work; Mid City is validating more models/years.)
Install — 4 connections to the telematics harness (passenger kick, in the taped harness running from the kick to the door):
- CAN high & CAN low: the factory purple/white and purple/green twisted pair. Connect SKSXC purple/white → factory purple/white, purple/green → purple/green. There may be TWO such twisted pairs — either set works, but use both wires from the SAME set (don't mix wires between sets).
- Power: SKSXC red → factory red wire.
- Ground: SKSXC black → the black/white wire at the bolt by the door jam (or use a ring terminal to the bolt). Solder and insulate all four connections. Then plug the module into its harness.
Operation:
- Remote start = 3× lock on the factory key fob (standalone, no add-ons needed).
- All doors AND windows must be fully closed, and fuel must be above ¼ tank, or remote start won't work.
- The system allows 2 remote starts between key cycles — the ignition must be turned on with the key (manual start or key takeover) for at least 2 minutes between them.
- Key takeover: unlock/enter with the key, press the brake, and rotate the turn-to-start dial clockwise (ignition) — cluster turns on, then shift into gear.
- Hood: remote start is disabled when the hood is open.
Add-ons: Compustar Drone → gray port (activate at dronemobile.com; blue+green LEDs should flash). RF remotes → black port via the Compustar FTD100 adapter; program by cycling ignition on/off 5× (via the push-to-start dial) until the OEM horn sounds, then press LOCK on each remote.
Mounting: recommended location is above the factory telematics module in the kick. Re-tape the factory harness, confirm all solder joints are insulated.
Sprinter-specific features (SKSNG906 / 906RV / 907 family)
The Sprinter products (highest support volume) have several features the passenger-car products don't. This applies to the 906/906RV and largely to the 907 family as well.
Valet switch (Sprinter)
The Sprinter uses a physical valet switch (not just a menu setting): white dot pressed in = remote start ON; blank side pressed in = remote start OFF (and a remote-start attempt then gives the 4-flash valet code). If a Sprinter won't remote start and flashes 4×, check the valet switch position first.
Hood pin (Sprinter — must be installed)
Unlike many passenger cars, the Sprinter requires a physical hood-pin switch to be installed on the driver-side hood mount (clean sealant off the screw, mount the bracket, adjust height, connect to the gray wire on the 6-pin EXP pigtail). If a Sprinter gives a 7-flash (hood open) code and the hood is closed, suspect hood-pin adjustment or the gray-wire connection.
External siren & LED (Sprinter)
The Sprinter's internal alarm sounds the OEM horn by default. An external siren connects via the brown wire on the 6-pin EXP pigtail (siren + ; black = ground). The LED connects to the 2-pin white LED port — solid when armed, then flashing after ~30 seconds to indicate the security sensor is calibrated. Three alarm modes: internal, external, off (set in options programming).
Start/Stop triggers — for automated house-battery charging (906/906RV)
This is a signature RV feature. The system can be auto-started by an external device (typically a battery monitor/relay) to charge house batteries:
- 1-wire trigger: ground the orange wire (6-pin EXP pigtail) → engine starts and runs until the ground is released or run time expires.
- 2-wire trigger: orange wire = start (momentary ground), yellow wire = stop (momentary ground).
- Default run time: 60 min (906) / 120 min (906RV) — adjustable in options.
High-idle control (906RV — yellow wire)
On the 906RV (high-idle version), when the external trigger is set to 1-wire, grounding the yellow wire on the 6-pin EXP pigtail suppresses high idle after an auto/remote start. Wire the yellow to an accessible switch to easily turn high idle on/off. (The 906RV also ships with an OBD programmer to activate high idle — see the High Idle section of the other-products KB.)
Turn-signal-stalk options programming (Sprinter — full procedure + matrix)
Sprinter options (SKSNG906/906RV and the older SKSNG164/211 family) are programmed with the turn-signal stalk, NOT a cluster menu. Walk a customer through it like this:
The procedure (authoritative, from the SKSNGFT programming matrix v6.09):
- Enter programming: turn the key to ACC, then pull the turn-signal stalk back (toward you) and HOLD ~10 seconds — lights flash 1×.
- Select the FEATURE: pull the stalk back — lights flash once per feature number (pull again to advance: 2 flashes = feature 2, etc.).
- Select the OPTION: push the stalk forward (away from you) — lights flash once per option number (push again to advance).
- Exit / save: turn the key OFF — lights flash 1×.

Key matrix notes (support-relevant):
- Vehicles with aftermarket keys MUST set Key Sync (feature 3) to option 3 ("aftermarket key") for correct operation — a common cause of no-start with a replacement key.
- High idle only works when the external trigger (feature 8) is set to 1-wire or 2-wire mode. If high idle won't engage on a 906RV, check that feature 8 isn't set to OFF.
- Factory reset = feature 10, option 4.
- Runtime default is 60 min (feature 2, option 3).
Worked example (feature 4, option 2 — remote engine halt ON): enter programming (pull & hold 10 s, 1 flash) → pull the stalk 4× to reach feature 4 → push the stalk 2× to select option 2 → key OFF to save.
IMPORTANT — settings reset on power loss: if the module loses power (unplugged, dead battery, battery disconnect), all programmed settings revert to factory defaults and must be re-entered. If a customer says their settings "changed on their own," ask whether the vehicle lost power.

Metal-case V2.7 upgrade note (Sprinter)
The SKSNG906 is backwards-compatible with the older "metal case" V2.7 module's 18-pin T-harness. When upgrading: disconnect the existing valet switch first (the old black switch with the white dot) — cut/insulate the two red wires to it or de-pin them from the 18-pin plug. The new module has 2 extra pins on the main plug (only connects one way) and comes with a new valet switch that replaces the old one.
SKSNG906 operation notes (from the owner's manual)
Key operational behaviors for the 906/906RV (useful for support calls, not just install):
- Settings reset on power loss (IMPORTANT): if the module is power-cycled (unplugged, vehicle loses power, battery disconnected), all field settings revert to factory defaults and must be re-programmed via the stalk. This explains "my run time / settings changed by themselves" calls — check whether the vehicle lost power.
- Default run time is 1 hour (60 min), changeable in the stalk menu.
- Before diagnostics or emissions testing: put the system in valet mode AND drive the vehicle at least 30 miles without issuing a remote start command. (A remote-start history can interfere with emissions/diagnostic testing.)
- Valet mode = physical switch: white dot pressed IN = remote start ON; blank side pressed in (white dot OUT) = OFF/valet (a remote-start attempt then gives the 4-flash code).
- Alarm arming: the alarm arms automatically whenever the doors are locked (OEM fob or app/RF), the ignition is off, and all doors are closed. Opening any door sounds the external siren; unlock disarms. With app/2-way RF, the user gets alarm alerts.
- External-trigger auto-restart: with an external start trigger, the system re-starts if a new start signal is applied after run-time expires — up to 5× or 10× depending on settings (e.g. a battery monitor re-commanding a start). Relevant to house-battery charging setups.
- OEM key-fob remote-start range is very poor on the 2007-18 Sprinter — Mid City recommends an RF remote or the app (Drone/Smart Start) for practical use.
SKSNG906RV manual high-idle activation (from the owner's manual)
On the 906RV, high idle engages automatically on remote/auto start. To activate it manually after a manual start: engage the parking brake, then pull the high-beam/turn-signal stalk toward you (pull again to turn off). Press the stalk UP to increase idle RPM, DOWN to decrease.
SKSNG907 software version requirements (frequent support cause)
The current-gen 907 is firmware-sensitive — a wrong/old version causes no-starts and odd behavior. Verify before/at install:
- Gasoline Sprinter: firmware must be V5.23 or above.
- 2023-and-up Sprinter: firmware must be V5.25 or above.
- 2025 Sprinter: requires the G variant — SKSNG907G or SKSNG907RVG (the non-G 907/907RV will NOT work on a 2025).
- Sprinters without the volume/mute steering-wheel buttons on firmware below V5.25 need a USB programming tool to change some settings. If a 907 install misbehaves on a newer/gas Sprinter, check the firmware version first.
SKSNG907 hood pin & the 2025 (G) difference
- 907 / 907RV (2019-24): hood pin required; v5.26+ ships a custom bracket (contact Mid City if you didn't get one). Gray wire on the 6-pin pigtail → 6-pin EXP port on the SKSPCM module.
- 907G / 907RVG (2025): the Sprinter has an OEM hood pin — no Mid City hood pin needed.
SKSNG907 expansion port (6-pin pigtail, v5.26+)
The 907/907RV expansion pigtail (white plug, on the SKSPCM module) carries:
- gray = hood pin (required, not optional)
- purple = valet — ground it to put the system in valet mode (remote start off)
- brown = external siren output (+)
- yellow = high-idle-off (907RV only) — ground during remote/auto start to suppress high idle
- orange = DAS-sensor-disable (if a Compustar DAS sensor is added)
- black = ground (for the siren and/or for switching any of the above inputs) Insulate any unused wires.
SKSNG907RV start/stop trigger (house-battery automation)
The 907RV's analog start/stop trigger is a 4-pin white plug into the white/ green "Trigger Input" port on the SKSPCM module:
- 1-wire (default): ground the green wire to start; runs until the ground releases or run time expires. Note: with a latched ground, the system will re-start if a new start signal is applied after run-time expiration.
- 2-wire: green = start, white = stop (momentary grounds); set via the hidden menu (contact Mid City for hidden-menu access). If the analog trigger isn't used, leave the 4-pin cable unplugged and insulate the wires.
SKSNG907 + 907MTE (miles-to-empty) coexistence
If a 907MTE (fuel-gauge / miles-to-empty recalibration) module is also installed: connect the SmartKey Starter directly to the OEM EIS, and put the 907MTE harness between the SKS T-harness and the OEM harness. (Relevant when a customer has both products on the same Sprinter.)
Flash Code Reference
When a remote start fails, the vehicle flashes the parking lights a number of times as an error code. Have the customer stand by the vehicle, attempt the remote start, and count the flashes. A single number (e.g. "9 flashes") is one code; a two-part code (e.g. "2+6" = two flashes, pause, six flashes) is a compound signal. This table is ordered by how often each code appears in support calls.
Baseline for ANY flash-code call: confirm fuel above ¼ tank, all doors/ windows closed, factory keys away from the vehicle, hood closed, and the vehicle driven recently (to reset the attempt counter). See §1.
Manufacturer-verified error codes (from official install manuals)
These codes are confirmed by Mid City Engineering's official installation manuals (SKSNG164, SKSNG166D3, and others) and are authoritative:
Additional codes on the SKSNG164/211/906 T-harness Sprinter platform (from the SKSNGFT programming matrix): 3 = normal shutdown, 5 = out of sync, 9 = RPM low (vs. RPM overrev on 8), 10 = unknown variant (in addition to the communication-error meaning on other platforms). On these platforms a trailing 3-flash sequence after the code is the normal shutdown indicator — count the initial flashes for the actual error.

The 30-second sync rule (critical, from the manuals): whenever the vehicle is started manually OR the ignition is turned on, leave it running / ignition on for at least 30 seconds. If it's shut off in under 30 seconds, the remote start won't sync with the key and you'll get error code 5 on the next remote start. To clear code 5: start manually and run ≥30 seconds. This also applies after key takeover.
Shutdown sequence note: after a brief pause, an error code may be followed by a 3-flash shutdown sequence — count the initial flashes for the code.
Official 9-flash procedure (from the SKSNG166D4 manual — authoritative, and the most common code in field data): "Not seeing the key or the button push." Work through in order:
- Make sure the push-to-start button is in the ignition — if the button isn't in the EIS, remote start fails with code 9.
- Press UNLOCK on the OEM key fob, then try to remote start. If it now works, the Keyless-Go harness connections are the problem — recheck them.
- Sit inside the vehicle with a working key on your person and remote start. If it works with a good key inside, the issue is the key in the box or its connection (emulator seating / key-box wiring — see §11). On key-box platforms specifically, also verify: the key's position in the box (too far forward or not far enough = key error), the 2-pin white plug is in the module and the RJ cable from the EIS is connected to the key box, and the key box lid is fully closed with NO light entering (light leaking into the box makes remote start fail).
- If it still won't start from inside with a working key even after pressing unlock, check the EIS modification (the jumper pin/wire — see the EIS jumper mod detail below). An EIS-mod problem shows as a 9 OR 11 flash key error.
(Older T-harness platforms — SKSNG164, 166D3 — do not list a 9-flash code in their manuals, since they don't use the key-box/EIS-mod system. On those, 9 flashes is unlikely; use the code table for that platform.)
High-frequency codes (well-supported by the data)
9 flashes — KEY IN THE BOX NOT DETECTED (by far the most common — ~92 calls) The system can't read the key stored in the box. Works with key inside the car but not remotely = classic nine-flash. Instrument cluster often says "key not recognized" / "no key detected."
- Check the U-shaped bracket is holding down the unlock button (box snug, fully depressing it). Most common fix.
- Check the battery emulator seating — positioned toward the front of the key, may need slight rotation; arrow on the green chip points toward the key tip.
- Voltage test: should read ~3-3.5V on the red wire to the key box during remote start. Low/no voltage → check emulator contact, resolder the key-box connection, or replace the key box.
- Re-sync the key (remove, put a battery in it, start car, reinsert). Replace the key battery if weak.
- See §11 (Emulator/Key Box) for the full procedure.
7 flashes — HOOD OPEN (clean, confirmed mapping) The hood pin reads the hood as open — remote start is disabled for safety.
- Close the hood / open and re-close it. Check both hood latches.
- If the hood is definitely closed, the hood pin switch/wire (gray) is faulty — disconnect the hood-pin wire to test, or disable the hood pin.
- This is a clean, high-confidence code: 7 flashes ≈ hood.
6 flashes — KEY TAKEOVER / KEY CONTACT (~11 calls, mostly takeover) Cranks once then shuts down, or shuts off when touching the brake during takeover.
- Perform key takeover correctly: brake + push-button held together for a full second (brake alone shuts it down). See §9.
- If it six-flashes on remote start (not takeover): key-in-box contact — check the emulator/bracket as for 9 flashes.
5 flashes — SYSTEM NEEDS THE FACTORY KEY (out of key codes) (~27 calls) Works once or a few times, then fails; needs to regenerate key codes.
- Start manually with the factory key, run 30-60 seconds to regenerate codes, then retry. There's a limited number of remote starts (often ~5) before it must see the factory key.
- Ensure the valet switch dot side is pushed in.
- Also the code seen during RF remote pairing (5 ignition cycles). See §7.
4 flashes — VALET MODE IS ON (~21 calls — clean mapping) Remote start is deliberately disabled by valet mode.
- Turn valet off: cluster menu (steering-wheel controls → remote-start on/off) or the drone app (turn off, save). The valet switch's white dot must be pushed in. See §2.
3 flashes — often NORMAL shutdown / lock confirmation, or battery/CAN (~23 calls) Note: three blinks is standard/normal behavior for many Sprinters (lock confirmation); four or more is where it indicates an error. If it's a genuine fault: check battery voltage during cranking, valet switch position, and the keyless-go/EIS connection.
Wiring/connection codes
1 flash (with persistent yellow LED) — CAN CONNECTION not made (~48 calls) The module isn't seeing the CAN bus. Run the identification procedure: put the vehicle in accessory (position 1), unplug factory CAN connectors one at a time until the yellow light shuts off, route that connector to the harness/purple connector, confirm green light. See §12.
1+1 flashes — same CAN-identification issue (fitment/wiring). Same procedure.
Key-detection compound codes (all in the 9-flash family)
These are all variants of key-not-detected; resolve as for 9 flashes (emulator seating, U-bracket, voltage on the red/purple wire, re-sync): 2+6, 9+1, 9+2, 9+3, 9+4, 9+15, 6+3, 1+6.
- 9+15 specifically points to a sleep/keyless-go issue — the CAN network wakes after the vehicle sits ~15 minutes; check the unlock-button depressor and keyless-go connection, and do a 15-20 minute sleep test.
- 9+2 / 9+4 often show low voltage on the purple wire during remote start — test with a multimeter; low/fluctuating voltage → check/resolder the purple wire or EIS solder points.
Programming / camera / module codes
10 flashes — programming or camera/J-51 (~14 calls) Split between: remote-start programming (light-flash setting), the OBD camera turning off above 10 mph (default behavior, reprogrammable), and J-51 / Miles-to-Empty programming. For camera/J-51: turn key to accessory, pull the high-beam/turn-signal stalk toward you and hold ~10 seconds to enter programming.
15 flashes — pairing mode confirmation (~5 calls) Press the push-to-start button 15 times (no foot on brake) to enter pairing mode; parking lights flash to confirm, then press the antenna button and lock on the remotes. Also seen as a low-voltage "not in park" warning when battery SOC drops below ~30%.
Lower-frequency / verify codes
- 8 flashes (~10 calls) — key-detection/battery family; treat like 9 flashes (emulator, key re-sync) and check battery voltage.
- 2 flashes (~14 calls) — mixed (programming, sensor, shutdown); count the full pattern and check the specific context.
- 11 flashes (~2 calls) — push the key further into the cylinder / check the chip; escalate if unresolved.
- 20 flashes (~3 calls) — sleep/keyless-go related; do the 20-minute sleep test.
- Compound codes not listed: identify the leading number first (it usually carries the primary meaning) and resolve that.
⚠️ Verification note: these mappings are derived from support-call transcripts, aggregated across ~3,500 calls. The high-frequency codes (9, 7, 6, 5, 4) are strongly and consistently supported. Lower-frequency and compound codes should still be confirmed against Mid City Engineering's official error-code documentation before being treated as authoritative. When a customer's flash count isn't listed or the fix doesn't resolve it, escalate with: VIN, photos of the EIS/key/emulator, a multimeter reading on the red/ purple wire, and a video of the flash pattern.
